  • Project typeI-81 Design Phase
  • Project valueNA
  • Project schedule8/22/2022 to 8/27/2022
  • Contractor nameDover, Kohl & Partners (DKP)

Residents are invited to share their ideas directly with planners and designers from Dover, Kohl & Partners (DKP) as they conduct open design studio sessions Tuesday, August 23 through Friday, August 26. The DKP team will conclude this initial visioning effort with a community open house on Saturday, August 27.  The community open house will feature free food and music and an unveiling of “big idea” concepts developed with the community during the week. All public participation will be hosted at STEM at Dr. King Elementary School.

The Interstate 81 project is about more than transportation. It is an opportunity to create healthier and more livable city neighborhoods. The Neighborhood Design Studio is a first of its kind opportunity for public engagement on the Interstate 81 project.  Residents will have the chance to work side-by-side with design professionals who are focused on how we can use this once in a generation opportunity to make stronger and more cohesive city neighborhoods.

About the Community Grid

Project History & Existing Conditions: New York State Governor has announced the formal Record of Decision for the Interstate 81 Viaduct Project in Syracuse, which will allow the Community Grid Alternative to proceed as the choice for replacing the Interstate 81 viaduct. Construction will begin this fall. As part of the $2.25 billion project, the viaduct, the existing elevated structure in place, will be replaced by a new Business Loop 81 with an integrated Community Grid.

The Community Grid Alternative would involve demolishing the existing viaduct. The Community Grid Alternative would take five years and cost $1.9 billion. Learn more at New York State Department of Transportation's website at https://webapps.dot.ny.gov/i-81-viaduct-project
